Baseball Recap: Mater Dei Catholic Gets the Win

After losing to Otay Ranch the last time they met, Mater Dei Catholic decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Crusaders came out on top in a nail-biter against the Mustangs on Wednesday, sneaking past 4-3. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Crusaders.

Xavier Castro looked comfortable as he tossed 2.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. He has become a key player for Mater Dei Catholic: the team is 4-2 when he allows at most one earned run, but 6-11 otherwise.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Joey Castillo, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Noah Cook, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base.

Mater Dei Catholic's record is now 10-13. As for Otay Ranch, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 16-7.

Mater Dei Catholic will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Mustangs: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
