Softball Game Preview: Capital Cougars vs. Spring Valley Timberwolves

Capital hasn't had much luck against Spring Valley recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Cougars will take on the Timberwolves at 6:00 p.m. Capital has given up an average of 10.3 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Capital is headed into Tuesday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fourth straight game on Monday. They lost 13-1 to Riverside.

Capital saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kathryn Crowder, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base.

Meanwhile, while Spring Valley put up plenty of runs on Monday, the same can't be said for South Charleston. The Timberwolves put the hurt on the Black Eagles with a sharp 12-0 victory. Considering the Timberwolves have won six games by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Addie Lowe tossed a big game, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Those 11 strikeouts gave her a new career-high.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Sydney Turner, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That double was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Layla Marshall, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

Spring Valley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .568. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Spring Valley has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-6 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games. As for Capital, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-14.

Capital might still be hurting after the 17-1 loss they got from Spring Valley in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Cougars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
