Preview: Marquette Redmen vs. Gaylord Blue Devils
The Marquette Redmen will be playing at home against the Gaylord Blue Devils at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Marquette's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last seven contests.
Marquette posted their biggest win yet this season on Thursday. Everything went their way against Sault Area as Marquette made off with a 68-46 victory. Given Marquette's advantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 57th, while Sault Area is ranked 270th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Gaylord can finally bid farewell to their five-game losing streak thanks to their game on Tuesday. They came out on top against Cheboygan by a score of 71-64. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
It was another big night for Luke Gelow, who dropped a double-double on 36 points and 15 rebounds. That makes it 13 consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of Gaylord's points. Collin Piehl was another key contributor, scoring four points along with seven steals.
Marquette's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-3. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.3 points per game. As for Gaylord, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-8.
Marquette beat Gaylord 69-58 in their previous matchup back in January of 2023. Does Marquette have another victory up their sleeve, or will Gaylord turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
