New Prairie is 7-2 against South Bend Riley since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Cougars will be playing at home against the Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. New Prairie is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
South Bend Riley is facing New Prairie at the wrong time: New Prairie suffered their first home loss of the season on Saturday and they're likely out for redemption. They fell just short of the Trojans by a score of 9-8. Cougars fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Trojans since on Saturday.
Randi Robakowski was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Abby Harmon, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, South Bend Riley won against Argos on Friday with 16 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Saturday. The Wildcats didn't even let Elkhart Christian Academy on the board, marking the Wildcats' second-straight 16-0 shutout. Considering the Wildcats have won seven matches by more than ten runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
ELLIANA GONZALES made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in April of 2024. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI.
In other batting news, South Bend Riley got a massive performance out of LEXINGTON JENKINS, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those four hits gave JENKINS a new career-high. LUCY FRANKO was another key player, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs.
South Bend Riley kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 22 hits. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
The victory was the third in a row for South Bend Riley, bringing their record up to 7-6. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.3 runs over those games. As for New Prairie, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. New Prairie has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like South Bend Riley struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 9.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
New Prairie took their victory against South Bend Riley in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 12-2 score. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wildcats turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
