The Mica Mountain Thunderbolts will square off against the Rio Rico Hawks at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Mica Mountain is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
Mica Mountain's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 10-0 margin over Arcadia. That's two games straight that the Thunderbolts have won by exactly ten runs.
Ethan Hunt was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two doubles. That's the most doubles he has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Johnny Nyman, who went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Mica Mountain always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. They are 8-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Rio Rico was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 9-7 heartbreaker at the hands of Salpointe Catholic. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Hawks have suffered since April 4th.
Rafael Echeverria made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two runs. Connor Switalski was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
Mica Mountain is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-11-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games. As for Rio Rico, their loss dropped their record down to 12-14.
Both Mica Mountain and Rio Rico just can't seem to miss. The Thunderbolts have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.8 hits per game. However, it's not like Rio Rico struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.5 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Mica Mountain came out on top in a nail-biter against Rio Rico when the teams last played back in March of 2024, sneaking past 9-7. Will the Thunderbolts repeat their success, or do the Hawks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
