Baseball Recap: South El Monte Extends Road Winning Streak to Three

South El Monte came out on top against Gabrielino on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run sixth inning. South El Monte took their match against Gabrielino 6-1. The win continues a trend for South El Monte in their matchups with Gabrielino: they've now won four in a row.

Christian Ortega spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on five hits and racked up nine Ks. He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Ryan Leon was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Armando Huizar, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

South El Monte's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 16-5. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.7 runs over those games. As for Gabrielino, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-8-1 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. South El Monte will venture away from home to square off against La Canada at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Eagles 1.7, the Spartans 3.3) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Gabrielino, they will head out on the road to challenge Mark Keppel at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. The Eagles are facing the Aztecs at the right time seeing as the Aztecs are stuck on an eight-game losing streak.
