39-game losing streak broken, high-scoring games test scoreboards on both sides of state
Video: Jacoby Reed's highlights vs. Scarborough
Watch the senior lead his Tigers as they snap their 39-game losing streak.
Notable happenings on the Texas football scene:
1. Houston Math Science & Tech last week snapped a four-year 39-game losing streak.
The Tigers, formerly known as Sam Houston, defeated Scarborough (Houston) 28-6. None of the current players were in high school when the Tigers last celebrated a victory: Sept. 6, 2012 when they defeated Austin (Houston) 19-13 for a 2-0 start.
2. From the "Not a basketball final score'' department last week:
*
Bishop Gorman (Tyler), a TAPPS DII member, got 10 touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback
Jake Smith in a 91-71 victory over
Ore City. Five of the touchdown throws went to
Judah Bell who had 16 receptions for the night.
*
Andrews defeated
Levelland 77-76 with the decisive play a stop of a two-point conversion try by the Andrews defense in overtime. That a defensive play would decide the Class 4A encounter is all the more ironic considering the two teams generated more than 1,300 yards of offense.
Levelland quarterback
Nick Gerber in a losing cause threw for nine touchdowns and ran for another.
Coming into the season, the UIL record for points in a game is 165 set in
Jacksonville's 84-81 victory over
Nacogdoches in 2010.
3. Keith Tarango Lopez, senior quarterback at
Eastlake (El Paso) accounted for 594 yards and eight touchdowns in the Falcons' first victory of the season, 60-49 over
Parkland (El Paso). The breakdown for Tarango-Lopez: 453 passing yards, five touchdowns; 141 rushing yards, three scores.
4. With a 26-3 road loss to
The Woodlands, defending Class 6A-DII state champion
Katy lost its second game of the season. It is notable because it marks the first time Katy has suffered two regular-season losses since 2008. Katy lost three games in the 2008 regular season, including a 47-0 throttling at The Woodlands, but went on to capture a state title.

5. Shawn Robinson, a senior quarterback at
DeSoto, had a hand in seven touchdowns and the Eagles needed all of them to hold off
Midland 49-43 on the road. Robinson, a TCU pledge, threw for 276 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 203 yards and three scores. He is a transfer from
Guyer (Denton). His mother Andrea is the new DeSoto girls basketball head coach and his father Othell is a football assistant coach with the Eagles.
6. Injuries have caused three high-profile Class 6A quarterbacks to miss starts.
Cedar Hill's
Avery Davis,
Chris Robison of
Horn (Mesquite) and
Sam Ehlinger of
Westlake (Austin), all with college commitments, could only look on from the sideline the last two games. Davis (ankle) is orally committed to Notre Dame; Robison (shoulder) is committed to Oklahoma and Ehlinger (knees) is pledged to Texas.
7. In his first season as head football coach at
Waxahachie, Jon Kitna lost a coin flip and the Indians missed the playoffs. But Kitna, a former NFL quarterback, has his team flying high with a 3-0 start this fall. In Week 2, Waxahachie scored a touchdown with 19 seconds remaining to defeat Highland Park, 40-37. Last week against rival
Ennis, Kitna's team won 50-20 for the Indians second straight triumph in the Battle of Highway 287. After three games, Waxahachie is averaging 45 points.
8. The grandson of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones,
John Stephen Jones, is off to a solid start as quarterback of 2-1
Highland Park (Dallas). The junior has completed 61 percent of his passes (47-76) for 715 yards and six touchdowns. He's added 81 rushing yards, scoring twice.
9. With two more wins this fall, Calallen (Corpus Christi) head coach Phil Danaher increased his career total to 420. He is only six behind the state record of G.A. Moore. Danaher is in his 43rd season as a head coach and his 33rd at Calallen.
