Basketball Recap: Rico Blassingame's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Tolleson over Apollo

After flying high against San Luis last Friday, Tolleson came back down to earth. The Tolleson Wolverines received a blow on Thursday as they fell 60-46 to the Apollo Hawks. The Wolverines were probably out for revenge after losing 74-54 to them when the teams met back in December of 2015, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Tolleson's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Rico Blassingame, who almost dropped a double-double on 22 points and nine rebounds. Blassingame is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last four games he's played. Johnny Rogers was another key player, putting up 12 points and four steals.

It was another big night for Cristian Acevedo, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 11 rebounds for Apollo. That's the most points Acevedo has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Eliijah White, who went 6 for 10 on his way to 12 points and five steals.

Tolleson has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-9 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.3 points per game. As for Apollo, the win snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 9-10 record.

Tolleson has already played their next contest (against Valley Vista), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Apollo is taking a road trip to square off against Shadow Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
