Preview: Thompson Warriors vs. Central Red Devils

After each having a week off, the Thompson Warriors and the Central Red Devils will shake off the cobwebs and challenge one another at 7:00 p.m. on December 6th. Both teams are coming into the match red-hot, with Thompson sitting on seven straight victories and Central on 12.

Thompson had already proven themselves in the regular season, and didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They came out on top against Hewitt-Trussville by a score of 21-10 on Friday.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Thompson to victory, but perhaps none more so than Aj Green, who rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns.

Thompson's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB three times. Kaleb Harris was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two sacks himself.

Meanwhile, Central faced Mary G. Montgomery in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Central strolled past Mary G. Montgomery with points to spare on Friday, taking the game 21-7.

Central's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Daylyn Upshaw, who picked up 174 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and Andrew Alford, who threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.0 yards per attempt. Alford is on a roll when it comes to passing touchdowns, as he's now passed for three or more in the last five games he's played.

Their wins bumped Thompson to 11-1 and Hewitt-Trussville to 9-4.

Wednesday's match might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Thompson has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 155.3 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Central struggles in that department as they've been even better at 158.1 per game. It's looking like Wednesday's contest might have some serious battles in the trenches. Thompson strolled past Central in their previous meeting back in December of 2021 by a score of 38-22. The rematch might be a little tougher for Thompson since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
