Softball Preview: Point Loma Pointers vs. Otay Ranch Mustangs
Point Loma and Otay Ranch are an even 4-4 against one another since March of 2015, but likely not for long. The Point Loma Pointers will be playing in front of their home fans against the Otay Ranch Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Both teams have allowed few runs on average, (Point Loma: 2.6, Otay Ranch: 3.8) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Last Friday, it was close, but Point Loma sidestepped Canyon Hills for a 2-1 win. The victory was just what Point Loma needed coming off of a 7-1 loss in their prior match.
Ryoko Schroth spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on six hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't pitched less than five innings in four consecutive pitching appearances.
On the hitting side, Point Loma saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tessa D'Arrigo, who went 1-for-2 with a stolen base and an RBI.
Meanwhile, Otay Ranch waltzed into their contest on Tuesday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They walked away with a 7-3 win over the Knights.
Otay Ranch also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Kaylin Phillips gave up three earned runs on ten hits.
At the plate, Ariele Torres was incredible, going 4-for-4 with a home run, three runs, and four RBI. Itzel Soto was another key contributor, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.
Point Loma's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-5. As for Otay Ranch, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 7-8 record this season.
