North takes three of five over South in CIF State volleyball championships

Mitty, Francis Parker repeat as champions, Valley Christian and Granite Bay take first titles and La Jolla Country day dethrones four-time defending champion Branson.

Three Northern Region took three of five division matches during the 2013 CIF State Volleyball Championships presented by Farmers at Santiago Canyon College on Saturday.

Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) (Division II) claimed a record tenth State title, Parker (San Diego) recorded their eighth State Championship and La Jolla Country Day (Division V) nabbed their third crown. Granite Bay (Division I) and Valley Christian (Division III) each secured their first State Championships.

Division I
Granite Bay def. Los Alamitos

Granite Bay (45-0) finished the season undefeated capped by the Grizzles first State Championship after a 3-1 victory over Los Alamitos. The Granite Bay duo of Nicolette Pinkney (18 kills) and Maddy Deters (17) combined for 35 of the squads 60 kills, while Taylor Nelson tallied 48 assists in the victory. The Griffins were led by 18 kills from Crissy Jones.

Sportsmanship Award Winners: Kelsey Osgood (Los Alamitos) and Cally Chamberlain (Granite Bay)

Division II
Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) def. Santiago (Corona)

The Archbishop Mitty Monarchs (42-2) claimed a State record tenth Championship, as they swept an undefeated Santiago (40-1). Clare Powers (16 kills), Alexa Dryer (12 kills) and Shirin Tooloee (11 kills) combined for 39 of the Monarchs 50 kills on the evening. As a team Mitty hit .333 and recorded six aces in the win. Chanel Hoffman led the Sharks with 20 kills, while Jessie Prichard tallied 36 assists in the loss.

Division III
Valley Christian (San Jose) def. Central Valley Christian (Visalia)




Scores: 25-20, 25-16, 25-10

In their first State appearance since 1986 the Valley Christian Warriors claimed their first State Championship as they swept the Central Valley Christian Cavaliers. Ronika Stone led Valley Christian with 15 kills, while Kirsten Mead and Ella Lajos each served five aces. Lindsey Calvin led the Cavaliers with 14 kills in the loss.

Madeleine Dilfer added eight kills and 22 assists for the winners, while Mead added eight kills and 15 assists. The Warriors contributed 11 blocks, eight from Ashlyn Fleming.

"The girls stepped up their game tonight," Valley Christian coach Jeff Kim told the San Jose Mercury News. "We served aggressive, we took care of the ball on serve receive and we did a great job terminating."

Division IV
Francis Parker (San Diego) def. Menlo (Atherton)


Scores: 21-25, 30-28, 25-15, 25-16

Francis Parker (29-5) repeated as the Division IV champs as they defeated Menlo (32-6), 3-1, for their eighth State Championship. It was a team effort for the Lancers who were led by Slen Gallop (19 kills), Mlchaela Dews (17 kills), Alex Deddeh (13) and Claire Nussbaum(49 assists, 5 service aces). Lida Vandermeer totaled 13 kills for the Knights, while Elisa Merten had 37 assists in the loss.

Division V
La Jolla Country Day def. Branson (Ross)


Scores: 28-26, 25-20, 25-23

The La Jolla Country Day Torreys (24-12) won their third State title as they defeated the Branson Bulls (35-7), who were the defending four-time champs. Arela Williams led the Torreys with 12 kills, Annie Hasselmann totaled 34 assists and Shaney Lipscomb and Devon Peterkin contributed nine kills each in the victory. Grace Roberts-Burbank (11), Sarah Wallace (9) and Jordan Winters (8) combined for 28 kills in the Bulls loss.
