Basketball Recap: Varina Comes Up Short

Varina was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their sixth straight loss. They were beaten by the Hanover Hawks 74-29. The Blue Devils were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 39-10.

Varina's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Kaliyah Straughter, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 13 boards, and Kya Ingram, who posted seven points in addition to eight rebounds and seven assists. Ingram has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last nine times she's played. Brielle Gillison was another key player, putting up seven points.

Even though they lost, Varina smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive boards in 12 consecutive contests.

Varina's record now sits at 2-10. As for Hanover, they have been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-4 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Varina and J.R. Tucker will face off at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday without much rest having both just played. J.R. Tucker will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something Varina surely won't give up without a fight. As for Hanover, they will venture away from home to take on Atlee at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
