Baseball Recap: Grand Island Islanders vs. Kearney Bearcats
Grand Island had lost three straight on the road, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 18-9 to make it four. They took a 7-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Kearney Bearcats. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Bearcats this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-4 back in April.
Grand Island got a good showing from Miles Nelson, who pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits. Nelson has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Sam Dinkelman made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Ethan Coslor, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
As for Kearney, the victory was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record up to 22-9. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games.
On Kearney's side, Derrick Nonhof looked comfortable as he pitched 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits.
On the hitting side, Gunner DeMilt and Tysen Cabela did most of the damage at the plate: DeMilt went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double, while Cabela went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs. That's the most hits Cabela has posted over his last 15 contests. Another player making a difference was Chase Bentz, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.
