Softball Recap: Birmingham Comes Up Short

Birmingham fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against West Ranch on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the West Ranch Wildcats by a score of 6-5. The Patriots were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wildcats apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

Melanie Mora spent all 8.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and four unearned) runs on 11 hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Camila Guillen made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Jasmine Martinez, who went 3-for-5 with one triple and two RBI.

Even though they lost, Birmingham hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive contests.

Birmingham's defeat dropped their record down to 2-4. As for West Ranch, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-5.

Looking ahead, Birmingham will host Notre Dame (SO) at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Notre Dame (SO) is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.3 runs per game this season. West Ranch has already played their next game (against Louisville), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
