Preview: Monterey Plainsmen vs. Wylie Bulldogs
Monterey is on a 17-game streak of home wins, while Wylie is on a four-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Monterey Plainsmen will take on the Wylie Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Monterey has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 1,587 points over their last 21 contests.
In what's become a running theme this season, Monterey gave their fans yet another huge victory on Tuesday. They really took it to Abilene for the full four quarters, racking up a 81-30 win at home. With Monterey ahead 44-19 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Aaliyah Chavez was her usual excellent self, shooting 5-for-10 from long range and dropping a triple-double on 42 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 steals. That makes it eight consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Monterey's points. Another player making a difference was Ambrosia Cole, who scored 14 points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Meanwhile, Wylie pushed their score all the way to 60 on Tuesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell to Cooper 66-60. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Wylie came into the match with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 144th, while Cooper is ranked 470th).
Monterey has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 20 of their last 21 games, which provided a nice bump to their 26-5 record this season. As for Wylie, their defeat dropped their record down to 17-11.
Monterey strolled past Wylie in their previous matchup on January 2nd by a score of 58-43. Will Monterey repeat their success, or does Wylie have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
