Basketball Recap: South Aiken Comes Up Short

South Aiken was the 50-28 winner over Academy of Richmond County when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The South Aiken Thoroughbreds took a 44-36 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Academy of Richmond County Musketeers on Friday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Thoroughbreds came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 108th in South Carolina, while the Musketeers are ranked 238th in Georgia).

When it comes to explaining why South Aiken lost, don't look at Myracle Culbreath. Despite the final result, she posted 13 points in addition to five boards and four steals.

Academy of Richmond County's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Shaniyah Thompson, who had 17 points. Another player making a difference was NaCja Johnson, who put up 13 points.

South Aiken's loss dropped their record down to 5-4. As for Academy of Richmond County, their record now sits at 5-7.

South Aiken didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 50-23 defeat against Josey on the 28th. As for Academy of Richmond County, they will challenge Howard at 6:00 p.m. on January 3rd. Academy of Richmond County is facing Howard at the right time seeing as Howard is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
