Elgin had to start their season on the road on Thursday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They were beaten by the Hays Hawks 43-13. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Wildcats of the 31-21 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in August of 2024.

Tacoma Ames was a one-man wrecking crew For Hays. as he threw for 212 yards and one touchdown on only 19 passes, and also rushed for 45 yards and one TD. Another player making a difference was Javian Caceres, who gained 80 total yards and a touchdown.
