Softball Game Preview: Phoenix Christian Cougars vs. ALA - Ironwood Warriors

The Phoenix Christian Cougars will take on the ALA - Ironwood Warriors at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams are strolling into their matches after big wins in their previous games.

ALA - Ironwood will be up against a hot Phoenix Christian team: the squad just extended their winning streak to six. Phoenix Christian never let Dysart get on the board and left with a 20-0 win on Wednesday. Considering the Cougars have won five contests by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Karly Van Metre made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Kyla Carpio was a standout: she got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Brianna Guerrero, who scored three runs and stole Three bases. while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.

Phoenix Christian was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .308 or higher in five consecutive games.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask ALA - Ironwood). They blew past Dysart 15-4 on Wednesday. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Warriors as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.

ALA - Ironwood's win bumped their record up to 2-6. As for Phoenix Christian, their victory bumped their record up to 6-0.

Phoenix Christian might still be hurting after the 17-0 loss they got from ALA - Ironwood in their previous meeting back in March of 2022. Can Phoenix Christian avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
