Softball Recap: Hardin County Cougars vs. Pope County Pirates

Hardin County proved they can win big last Monday (they won by 14) but on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged the Pope County Pirates out 6-4. This was payback for Hardin County, who suffered a 6-4 loss the last time these two teams met.

Whitlee Fricker spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on one hit and racked up nine Ks. Those nine strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.

At the plate, Macey Martin was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Kendal McKinley, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a double.

On Pope County's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: MADDIE WALKER gave up four earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up six Ks. WALKER has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't pitched less than five innings in three consecutive pitching appearances.

On the hitting side, BELLA FASOLO was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.

The win got Hardin County back to even at 6-6. As for Pope County, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-13.

Hardin County will head out on the road to take on Galatia/Thompsonville at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Pope County, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Carrier Mills-Stonefort at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Carrier Mills-Stonefort is coming into the match with four straight losses on the road, meaning Pope County will have to defend against a squad hungry for a victory.
