Baseball Recap: New Athens Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Farmington, New Athens was happy to have turned things around on Tuesday. They walked away with a 7-3 win over the Valmeyer Pirates. The victory was some much needed relief for the Yellow Jackets as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Carson Lauer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned runs on five hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Wil Mulholland, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. New Athens is 3-1 when Mulholland posts two or more stolen bases, but 2-4 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Brodie Sieber, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2.

New Athens was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. The last time their batting average was this high was back in April of 2024.

The win got New Athens back to even at 5-5. As for Valmeyer, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last eight matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-9 record this season.

New Athens will have a chance to go back-to-back against Valmeyer: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
