Recap: Mount Miguel Matadors vs. Santana Sultans
The Mount Miguel Matadors won the last time they faced the Santana Sultans, and things went their way on Tuesday too. Mount Miguel took down Santana 72-53. Given Mount Miguel's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 441st, while Santana is ranked 1016th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Mekhi Sydney, who scored 23 points along with four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jasen Hughes, who scored 14 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Several Sultans players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Caine Lawless, who scored 13 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Lawless has scored all season. Dain Diaz was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with 11 rebounds.
Mount Miguel has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 18-8 record this season. As for Santana, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 9-18.
Mount Miguel has the luxury of staying home another game and will welcome El Cajon Valley at 7:00 p.m. on February 9th. Mount Miguel has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. Santana is on the road again on Friday and plays Grossmont at 7:00 p.m. on February 9th. Santana is facing Grossmont at the right time seeing as Grossmont is stuck on a eight-game losing streak.
