Baseball Recap: Coconino Comes Up Short

Coconino had lost three straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 8-14-1 to make it four. They fell 10-7 to the Flagstaff Eagles. The Panthers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Eagles apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

Steven Stone was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with three runs and two RBI. He has become a key player for Coconino: the team is 5-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-12-1 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Jake Hanley, who went 1-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

As for Flagstaff, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 16-9. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.5 runs over those games.

On Flagstaff's side, the team relied heavily on Payne Lowry, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Those three hits gave Lowry a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Christian Welker, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

While Coconino had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
