League recap: McClain climbs in state rankings with win

McClain moved up to 155 from 182 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 3A Region 4. The Mustangs climbed the ranks as a result of defeating Belmont 34-6.

East Side extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Kossuth, 44-22. The victory was the 12th in a row for the team.

McClain's dynamic duo of Rotavious Thurmond and Acaunya Brown proved tough for the Cardinals to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Thurmond threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns and Brown had 220 yards receiving. Robert Jordan helped McClain's passing attack out by catching one ball for 33 yards.

Jaylon Thomas was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 214 yards on 14 carries as East Side beat Belmont. Teammate Quadre Butler added to the ground attack by rushing for 204 yards.

6-foot-1 quarterback Thurmond of the Mustangs is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1622. He has also thrown 22 touchdowns. On the ground, Roger Burton's team's Butler has rushed for 1638 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Devante Crow. The Leflore County star has 26 catches for 648 yards.

Thurmond of the McClain is only 27 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 97 carries Thurmond has accumulated 973 yard this year.

The Mustangs made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 6,717 from 8,129. The improvement was the result of 34-6 victory over Kerry Moody's team last week.
