Basketball Recap: Cardinal Newman Comes Up Short

Cardinal Newman was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were four points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 57-53 heartbreaker at the hands of the Lugoff-Elgin Demons. That's two games in a row now that the Cardinals have lost by exactly four points.

When it comes to explaining why Cardinal Newman lost, don't look at Kristin Moye. Despite the final result, she posted 23 points in addition to six boards and four steals. Those 23 points gave Moye a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ayana Reyes, who put up 11 points and five rebounds.

Leading Lugoff-Elgin to victory were Jordan Samuel and Teryn Hobson. Samuel had 23 points in addition to six assists and three steals, while Hobson dropped a double-double on 12 points and 12 boards. Samuel is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 12 games she's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Erin Manuel, who posted four points along with eight boards and four steals.

Cardinal Newman's defeat dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Lugoff-Elgin, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-7.

Cardinal Newman didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 49-33 loss against Hanahan on the 30th. As for Lugoff-Elgin, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 50-15 win against Cathedral Academy on the 30th.
