Softball Recap: Fullerton Picks Up Third Straight Win on the Road

Fullerton had won three straight on the road, but on Friday they bumped their record up to 16-6 to make it four. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Kennedy Fighting Irish a 1-0 shutout. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Indians have posted since April 2nd.

Not much got past Katelynn Mathews, who gave up just three hits and racked up 17 Ks to keep Kennedy off the board. With that strong performance, Mathews is now averaging an impressive 5.4 strikeouts per game.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Abby Lee, who went 2-for-3 with one home run.

As for Kennedy, their loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 7-14. Having soared to a lofty 17 runs in the game before, their shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

On Kennedy's side, Emory Cheng spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on seven hits and racked up nine Ks. Cheng has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

The future could be bright for both Fullerton and Kennedy: their next opponents haven't had the best luck recently. The Indians will look to extend Esperanza's nine-game losing streak when they meet at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
