Softball Recap: Nansemond River Comes Up Short

Nansemond River had lost three straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped down to 2-4 to make it four. They came up short against the Deep Creek Hornets, falling 16-8. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Warriors of the 6-2 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2025.

Demetria Burton was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Bailey Hare was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

As for Deep Creek, their record is now 5-1. With that win, they brought their scoring average up to 7 runs per game.

On Deep Creek's side, Larah Fray spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six earned (and two unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up six Ks. Fray has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Hailey Lack was a standout: she went 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Izzy Shollenbarger, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with four runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Nansemond River and Deep Creek will both get a bit of extra prep time before their next contests. The next time Nansemond River sees the field they'll take on Nandua at 4:30 p.m. on the 15th. As for Deep Creek, their break will end when they face King's Fork at 5:45 p.m. on the 14th.
