Three-star running back leads San Diego Section champs to historic Southern California Division 1-AA Bowl victory.
Though they definitely had a lot of Lucky.
Senior tailback
Lucky Sutton rushed 27 times for 435 yards and seven touchdowns as the Dons (11-2) advanced to the state bowl title game against Folsom (11-3),
a surprise 28-27 Northern California winner over De La Salle.
They also won the highest scoring game (133 points) in 15-year state-bowl history, topping the mark of 130 set in 2018 when Folsom defeated Central (Fresno) 84-46 in a NorCal regional game.
Sutton, a 6-foot-1, 205-pounder who entered with 1,945 rushing yards and 33 total touchdowns, scored on six rushing touchdowns and one receiving. All but a 2-yard run were longer than 45 yards.
Remarkably, the score was 7-0 after the first quarter in this one.
Cathedral Catholic scored all 71 of its points after the first quarter. Sutton opened his team's scoring with a 6-yard reception from
Charlie Mirer. From there, he scored on runs of 62, 45, 63, 75, 80 and 2 yards.
Teammate
Darian Whaley added a 51-yard touchdown run and Mirer added two more touchdown passes.
The Dons needed all that scoring because Orange Lutheran (10-5) had huge performances from
Desmin Jackson, who scored four touchdowns on runs of 19, 42 and 76 yards and caught a 10-yard TD pass from
Logan Gonzalez, who was 31-for-45 for 433 yards and five touchdowns, four to
Jaylen Lynch.
Orange Lutheran scored 13 more points Friday than it did in any single game this season, but lost by nine.
