Preview: Sycamore Spartans vs. Morgan Park Mustangs
The Sycamore Spartans will head out on the road to face off against the Morgan Park Mustangs at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Friday, Sycamore was fully in charge, breezing past Evergreen Park 42-13 at home. Sycamore pushed the score to 42-0 by the end of the third, a deficit Evergreen Park cut but never quite recovered from.
Sycamore's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Burke Gautcher led the charge by throwing for 187 yards and three touchdowns on only 11 passes. Tyler Curtis was in the mix as well, providing Sycamore with two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Morgan Park had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21 points), and they went ahead and made it eight on Saturday. Everything went their way against Corliss/Butler College Prep as Morgan Park made off with a 34-12 win. With Morgan Park ahead 27-0 at the half, the match was all but over already.
Morgan Park relied on the efforts of Stanley Thompson, who picked up 75 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and Marcus Thaxton, who threw for 189 yards and three touchdowns on only 15 passes. Thompson was no stranger to the big play, lighting up the secondary with a catch that went for 64 yards.
Sycamore's victory was their 11th straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 9-1. They've been dominating during the games in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 31 points. As for Morgan Park, their victory bumped their record up to 9-1.
