Softball Recap: Middletown Mustangs vs. St. Helena Saints

Middletown had lost six straight at home, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 5-12 to make it seven. They lost 13-3 to the St. Helena Saints. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Saints this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 10-0 back in April.

Bev Fetters was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That hit marked the first that she has got this season.

As for St. Helena, the victory was the 14th in a row for them, bringing their record up to 18-4. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.7 runs over those games.

On St. Helena's side, Ada Blanton made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. That's the most strikeouts Blanton has posted since back in March. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two runs and one double.

In other batting news, Lillian Grimes was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with three runs and one stolen base. Those three runs gave her a new career-high. Malia Lund was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Middletown will challenge Upper Lake at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. As for St. Helena, they will square off against Fort Bragg at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Timberwolves have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed seven runs per game on average), something the Saints will no doubt try to take advantage of.
