Basketball Recap: Nucla Takes a Loss

If Nucla was feeling good fresh off their 66-7 takedown of Ouray last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Nucla Mustangs were just a bucket shy of victory on Thursday and fell 43-42 to the De Beque Dragons. The Mustangs were not able to make up for their loss to the Dragons from their previous meeting back in February of 2024.

Despite the loss, Nucla still got an impressive performance from Kendra McCluer, who posted 18 points and six boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Lantry Galley, who put up ten points in addition to five rebounds and three blocks.

Even though they lost, Nucla smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 28 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

De Beque was led to victory by Avery Rigsby and Allyson Sandidge. Rigsby went 9 of 18 on her way to 22 points along with eight boards and five assists, while Sandidge went 5 for 10 en route to 13 points and six rebounds. Rigsby's evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points.

Nucla moved to 10-3 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak. As for De Beque, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-3 record this season.

Nucla wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 48-7 victory against Dolores on the 24th. As for De Beque, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 35-33 loss against West Grand on the 25th.
