McGuffey is 7-2 against Charleroi since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Highlanders will head out to square off against the Cougars at 4:00 p.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
McGuffey proved they can win big on Monday (they won by 11) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They never let Brownsville get on the board and left with a 1-0 victory. The one-run effort marked the Highlanders' lowest-scoring matchup of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
The result came thanks to Makenna Crothers's shutout, as she gave up just two hits. Those hits were her first of the season.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Sidney Dobrzynski, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Charleroi posted their closest win since May 3, 2024 on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-3 victory over Steel Valley.
Ariahna Blouse spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on six hits and racked up six Ks.
At the plate, Rya Dipietrantonio was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Lyla Brunner, who scored a run and stole two bases.
McGuffey now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Charleroi, their win bumped their record up to 3-4.
Charleroi's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. McGuffey has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.6 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Charleroi, though, as they've been averaging only 2.7 strikeouts. Will McGuffey keep running through batters, or will the Cougars buck the trend?
McGuffey came out on top in a nail-biter against Charleroi in their previous matchup back in May of 2019, sneaking past 5-3. Do the Highlanders have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cougars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
