2A/1A Western Highlands recap Sept. 26, 2012
Owen was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fifth in 2A/1A Western Highlands. Earlier in the week, the Warhorses defeated Mitchell 49-0.
Thomas Jefferson Academy extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Avery County, 13-6. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.
Hendersonville's dynamic duo of Grant Rivers and Shawn Rogers proved tough for Madison to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Rivers threw for 318 yards and Rogers had 174 yards receiving. Dj Wilson helped Hendersonville's passing attack out by catching three balls for 123 yards.
McKinnon Martin was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 175 yards on 29 carries as Thomas Jefferson Academy bested the Patriots. Teammate Will McCraw added to the ground attack by rushing for 80 yards.
Hendersonville's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Bearcats feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Rivers has thrown for 1274 yards and nine touchdowns this season, while Wilson has 19 catches for 540 yards. Desean Jackson leads the league in rushing with 808 yards.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Thomas Jefferson Academy takes on second place Madison. Last week, Jerry Cash's team beat the Vikings, while Madison fell to Hendersonville.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Gryphons take on Mark Gosnell's team. Thomas Jefferson Academy has allowed 65 points this season, while the Patriots have given up 92. The Gryphons allowed 6 points last week as they bested Avery County.
Owen took down the Mountaineers 49-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
