Baseball Game Preview: Douglass Red Devils vs. Lakeland Preparatory Lions

The Douglass Red Devils will venture away from home to take on the Lakeland Preparatory Lions at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Douglass has struggled recently with 11 defeats in a row, while Lakeland Preparatory will arrive with seven straight victories.

Douglass came up short against Trezevant on Wednesday, falling 14-3.

Meanwhile, Lakeland Preparatory got the win against Tipton Christian Academy on Monday by a conclusive 17-2. Considering the Lions have won eight matches by more than nine runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Brett Godwin made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He pitched two innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one triple and two RBI. That triple marked the first that he hit this season.

In other batting news, Noah Lindsey was a standout: he scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Wyatt Helton was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

Lakeland Preparatory was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .583. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Lakeland Preparatory's win was their tenth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-2. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games. As for Douglass, their loss dropped their record down to 0-4.

Douglass might still be hurting after the 20-0 defeat they got from Lakeland Preparatory in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Red Devils avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
