Preview: ASPIRA Charter Wolves vs. Freire Charter School Wilmington Dragons
ASPIRA Charter has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. Having just played yesterday, they will head out on the road to face off against the Freire Charter School Wilmington Dragons at 5:00 p.m. on January 25th. Hopefully ASPIRA Charter focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 31 on Wednesday.
ASPIRA Charter posted their biggest victory yet this season on Wednesday. They put the hurt on First State Military Academy with a sharp 57-34 win.
It was another big night for Zy'aire Gibson, who scored 26 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. That makes it five consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of ASPIRA Charter's points. Victor McLeod was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with three steals.
Meanwhile, this season hasn't been kind to Freire Charter School Wilmington, who are still winless after their ninth contest. They fell to Avon Grove Charter 37-33. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Freire Charter School Wilmington came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 59th in Delaware, while Avon Grove Charter is ranked 253rd in Pennsylvania).
ASPIRA Charter's victory bumped their record up to 5-7. As for Freire Charter School Wilmington, their loss dropped their record down to 0-9.
Everything came up roses for ASPIRA Charter against Freire Charter School Wilmington in their previous meeting back in December of 2023 as the squad secured a 65-30 win. With ASPIRA Charter ahead 36-14 at the half, the game was all but over already.
