Basketball Recap: Springfield Comes Up Short

Springfield suffered their closest loss since January 28, 2025 on Wednesday. They fell just short of the Westland Cougars by a score of 56-54. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 321st, while the Cougars are ranked 123rd).

Westland's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Antwon Pollard, who went 6-for-9 from beyond the arc on his way to 21 points. Thanks to that strong game, Pollard now owns an excellent 48.6% field goal percentage. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaydenn Deedat, who shot 89% from the field to rack up 17 points and five boards.

Springfield has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last seven contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season. As for Westland, they pushed their record up to 10-3 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road.

Coming up, Springfield will head out to challenge Northmont at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Thunderbolts have been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Westland, they will look to defend their home court on Saturday against Zanesville at 2:00 p.m.
