Softball Recap: William Byrd Terriers vs. Staunton River Golden Eagles
William Byrd extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 9-12 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Staunton River Golden Eagles. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Golden Eagles this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 11-8 back in April.
As for Staunton River, they pushed their record up to 17-4 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.9 runs over those games.
For Staunton River's part, they got a great performance from Emma Alcorn as she struck out six batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts Alcorn has posted since back in April.
At the plate, Staunton River saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Carly Overstreet, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Another was Payton Chewning, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Coming up, William Byrd will challenge Pulaski County at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Staunton River, they will square off against Fleming at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Colonels have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.82 runs per game on average), something the Golden Eagles will no doubt try to take advantage of.
