For the first time this season, Coronado will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup on Wednesday. They will venture away from home to square off against the Foothill Falcons at 3:00 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Coronado took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Saturday. They walked away with a 9-4 win over Rancho. The Cougars haven't had any issues with the Rams recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.
Mariano Rodriguez looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits.
At the plate, Coronado let Milano Bradley and Santiago Cocon run wild. Bradley scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2, while Cocon got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and one triple. Those runs marked the first that Bradley scored this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Drew Steffen, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5.
Meanwhile, on Saturday Foothill's undefeated season almost came to an end. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Southeast Career Tech, sneaking past 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Falcons have posted since March 27, 2024.
Matt Masias looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits.
On the hitting side, Thayne Watson and Matthew Szymarek did most of the damage at the plate: Watson scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3, while Szymarek went 1-for-4 with one home run. Another player making a difference was Tyler Straily, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Foothill kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Coronado's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for Foothill, their record now sits at 4-0.
Coronado came up short against Foothill when the teams last played back in April of 2024, falling 5-0. Can Coronado avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
