League recap: Grand Valley rises in state rank

Northeastern Athletic recap October 22, 2013

Grand Valley moved up to 565 from 591 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Northeastern Athletic. The Mustangs climbed the ranks as a result of topping Pymatuning Valley 22-16.

Chalker led the league in scoring this week by notching 30 points on Mathews. Austin Casper threw for 139 yards and 3 touchdowns during the win.

The Wildcats' offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. On the ground John Mazzola chipped in 190 yards. Travis Lehman helped Chalker's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 22 yards.

He was 12-17 with 1 interception.

Mazzola provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Chalker defeated the Mustangs. Mazzola's key target this week was Justin Len, who caught 5 passes for 79 yards.

Casper put up the best numbers in passing as Ryan Slone's team topped Mathews. Casper's favorite target this week was Len, who caught 5 passes for 79 yards.

5-foot-10 quarterback Casper of the Wildcats is the league leader in passing yards this season with 618. He has also thrown 8 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Nick Holt. The Pymatuning Valley star has 22 catches for 369 yards.

An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Chalker takes on Windham. At the moment, the Wildcats are in first, while the Bombers are in fifth.

Grand Valley made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 10,618 from 11,220. The improvement was largely due to a 22-16 victory over the Lakers last week.
