Softball Game Preview: Copper Canyon Aztecs vs. Washington Rams

For the second straight game, Copper Canyon will face off against Washington. The Aztecs will host the Rams at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Copper Canyon has three straight victories, Washington has eight straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Copper Canyon barely beat Washington the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Aztecs put the hurt on the Rams with a sharp 20-7 win on Monday.

Kayla Gonzalez was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up six earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with four stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. Those four stolen bases gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Ellecia Gonzales was a standout: she scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all six of her plate appearances. What's more, she posted three RBI, the most she's had since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Maria Espinoza, who scored two runs and stole five bases while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances.

Copper Canyon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .745. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Washington's defeat dropped their record down to 1-9. As for Copper Canyon, their victory was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 4-10.
