Baseball Game Preview: Colfax Bulldogs vs. Pomeroy Pirates

The Colfax Bulldogs will challenge the Pomeroy Pirates at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The timing isn't great for Colfax: they have been struggling with three straight losses at home, while Pomeroy has snatched up three consecutive wins on the road.

Colfax fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Asotin on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 6-5. That's two games in a row now that the Bulldogs have lost by just one run.

Meanwhile, Pomeroy got the win against Colton on Tuesday by a conclusive 12-1. Considering the Pirates have won seven contests by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Jett Slusser made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He is becoming a predictor of Pomeroy's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 4-1 (and 6-8 when he doesn't). Slusser was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Boone Schmidt was excellent, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. Jacob Reisinger was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Pomeroy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .478. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Colfax's loss dropped their record down to 12-6. As for Pomeroy, they now have a winning record of 10-9.

Colfax took their victory against Pomeroy in their previous matchup back in April of 2019 by a conclusive 10-0 score. Will the Bulldogs repeat their success, or do the Pirates have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
