Basketball Game Preview: Smithsburg Leopards vs. Spring Mills Cardinals

The Smithsburg Leopards will head out to face off against the Spring Mills Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Spring Mills will be up against a hot Smithsburg team: the squad just extended their winning streak to five. Smithsburg blew past Governor Thomas Johnson 79-45 on Thursday. Given the Leopards' advantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 50th, while the Patriots are ranked 156th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Smithsburg's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Claire Bono led the charge by shooting 5-for-7 from long range and dropping a double-double on 20 points and 11 boards. Another player making a difference was Jillian Malott, who went 10 of 16 en route to 24 points.

Smithsburg was working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in February of 2024.

Meanwhile, everything came up roses for Spring Mills against Hedgesville on Thursday as the team secured a 55-17 victory. The Cardinals pushed the score to 44-11 by the end of the third, a deficit the Eagles had no chance of recovering from.

The win made it two in a row for Spring Mills and bumps their season record up to 4-5. As for Smithsburg, they are also on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-2 record this season.
