Baseball Recap: Wayne County Takes a Loss

Wayne County extended their losing streak to four on Thursday, dropping them down to 19-12. They fell 6-2 to the Russell County Lakers. If the Cardinals were looking for revenge after losing 10-1 to the Lakers when the teams met back in May of 2025, then they'll just have to keep looking.

As for Russell County, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-20 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games.

For Russell County's part, Blaine Melton looked comfortable as he struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits (and only one walk). Melton is becoming a predictor of the Lakers' success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 5-1 (and 10-19 when he doesn't).

On the hitting side, Russell County's win was truly a team effort as six different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Walker Stephens, who went 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Wayne County will face off against Madison Southern at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Eagles have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.51 runs per game on average), something the Cardinals will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Russell County, they will square off against South Warren at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
