Baseball Game Preview: Somers Spartans vs. Coventry Patriots

The Somers Spartans will challenge the Coventry Patriots at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Somers sitting on four straight wins and Coventry on ten.

On Monday, Somers beat Canton 7-3.

The home team had won the previous three meetings between Coventry and Rockville, and Coventry kept the tradition alive. The Patriots were the clear victors by an 18-8 margin over the Rams on Monday. The Patriots might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine contests by eight runs or more this season.

Kevin Johnson made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out ten batters over 4.1 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run was his first of the season.

In other batting news, Mather Spear and Matteo Albano did most of the damage at the plate: Spear went 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple, while Albano got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and two doubles. That's the most runs Spear has posted since back in April of 2025. Kyle Hecht was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

Coventry kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Coventry's victory bumped their record up to 11-1. As for Somers, their win bumped their record up to 9-1.

Somers beat Coventry 4-1 when the teams last played back in April of 2025. Do the Spartans have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Patriots turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
