Softball Game Preview: School Without Walls Penguins vs. Cardozo Clerks

The School Without Walls Penguins will be defending their home field for the first time this season when they go up against the Cardozo Clerks at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (School Without Walls has four straight wins, Cardozo has six straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

If School Without Walls beats Cardozo with 22 runs on Tuesday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two games with that exact score. School Without Walls put the hurt on Model Secondary School for the Deaf with a sharp 22-6 victory on Friday. Fans of the Penguins have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 6+ runs.

Ashley Ayala-Rubio was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing eight bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Those eight stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Emma Pfaffenroth was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing four bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.

School Without Walls hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts every time they've taken the field this season.

Meanwhile, Cardozo had to start their season on the road on Thursday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They came up short against Jackson-Reed, falling 18-2.

School Without Walls pushed their record up to 4-0 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 21.5 runs this season. As for Cardozo, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-1.

Everything went School Without Walls' way against Cardozo in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as School Without Walls made off with a 22-12 win. Does School Without Walls have another victory up their sleeve, or will Cardozo turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
