Northern Valley has gone 8-2 against Cheylin recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Northern Valley Huskies will take on the Cheylin Cougars at 7:30 p.m. Northern Valley is coming into the match on a three-game losing streak.
Last Tuesday, Northern Valley had to suffer through a 69-27 loss at the hands of Alma. While losing is never fun, the Huskies can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 221st in Kansas, while the Cardinals are ranked 48th in Nebraska).
Despite their loss, Northern Valley saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Tait Thalheim, who posted 14 points, was perhaps the best of all. The team also got some help courtesy of Owen Hammond, who put up nine points and six rebounds.
Meanwhile, Cheylin greeted the New Year with with a 51-36 win over Wauneta-Palisade.
Northern Valley better focus on containing Landon Schoenberger and Kohen Pochop as the pair were huge in Cheylin's win. Schoenberger had 20 points and five assists, while Pochop posted 15 points along with six boards and three steals. With that strong performance, Schoenberger is now averaging an impressive 15.3 points per game. Andrew Wright was another key player, putting up eight points.
Cheylin now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Northern Valley, their defeat ended a seven-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 3-5.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Northern Valley has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 33.1 boards per game. However, it's not like Cheylin struggles in that department as they've been averaging 27.9 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Northern Valley didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Cheylin in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, but they still walked away with a 61-56 victory. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Cheylin's Pablo Bermudez, who went 8 of 15 on his way to 20 points and seven steals.
