Recap: Hunter Wolverines vs. Corner Canyon Chargers
The Hunter Wolverines struggled with offensive rebounds on Friday (the Corner Canyon Chargers had seven more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Hunter took a hard 60-42 fall against Corner Canyon. While losing is never fun, Hunter can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Utah basketball rankings (they are ranked 78th, while Corner Canyon is ranked 16th).
When it comes to explaining why Hunter lost, one person who can't be blamed is Kalysa Ng. Despite the final result, she scored 19 points along with four steals. Those 19 points set a new season-high mark for her. DaKota F Peyton was another key contributor, scoring five points along with 12 rebounds.
Corner Canyon had a senior duo take command as Elina Mortensen dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten steals and Maia Rhay scored 16 points along with nine steals and five rebounds. The matchup was Mortensen's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Lexi LeRoy, who scored ten points.
Hunter's defeat dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Corner Canyon, their win ended a three-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hunter will challenge Alta at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Alta has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 255 points over their last four games. As for Corner Canyon, they will head out on the road to face off against Cyprus at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Cyprus focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 on Friday.
