Volleyball Recap: Spearfish's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Tuesday

If Spearfish was riding high fresh off their 3-0 takedown of Custer last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Spartans fell just short of the St. Thomas More Cavaliers by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday. The Spartans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cavaliers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in October of 2024.

Spearfish actually scored more points across those five sets (106-102), but sadly they still had to settle for second. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 12-25, 17-15.

Kaitlyn Wheaton paced Spearfish's offense, picking up 18 kills. Wheaton got some help from Kali Reiners and her 43 assists. Finally, Tabby Zandstra kept Spearfish's defense grounded, leading the team with five blocks.

With the defeat, Spearfish broke their four-match winning streak and moved their record to 12-6. As for St. Thomas More, they pushed their record up to 17-4 with the victory, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season.

Spearfish and St. Thomas More should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps South Dakota Rankings. The Spartans (ranked 18th) will meet Douglas (ranked 99th) on Saturday. Meanwhile, St. Thomas More will take on Mahpiya Luta at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday with a big rank advantage (26 vs. 135).
