If Mater Bay Academy was feeling good fresh off their 101-9 takedown of Archimedean back in December of 2024, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Mater Bay Academy Rays fell 56-48 to the Sunset Knights on Tuesday. The Rays' defeat signaled the end of their eight-game winning streak.

Mater Bay Academy lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Jose Echane, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 boards. Echane is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down nine or more in the last six games he's played. Another player making a difference was Randy Garcia, who posted 11 points.

Sunset's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Brandon Luis, who went 8 of 14 on his way to 21 points. That makes it three consecutive games in which Luis has scored at least a third of Sunset's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jonathan Clarke, who went 5 of 8 en route to 14 points and four steals.

Having lost for the first time this season, Mater Bay Academy fell to 8-1. As for Sunset, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a massive bump to their 6-4 record this season.

Mater Bay Academy wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 52-45 win against Marathon on the 8th. As for Sunset, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 45-43 loss against Varela on the 10th.
