Baseball Recap: Hammond Morton Wins Going Away Against Whiting

Hammond Morton barely beat Whiting the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Governors blew past the Oilers 17-4 on Thursday. The result was nothing new for the Governors, who have now won six contests by ten runs or more so far this season.

David Shreve and Marcellous McQuay did most of the damage at the plate: Shreve went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base, while McQuay went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most hits Shreve has posted since back in April of 2024. Gerard Garnett also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Hammond Morton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .548. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

The win made it two in a row for Hammond Morton and bumps their season record up to 8-11. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.0 runs over those games. As for Whiting, they are on a 13-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-15.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hammond Morton will take on Hebron at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Whiting, they will square off against North Judson-San Pierre at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
