Baseball Recap: Shepherd Comes Up Short

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Shepherd and Gladwin meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Saturday. The Bluejays fell just short of the Flying G's by a score of 5-3. The Bluejays were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Flying G's earlier this season, when they won 5-4.

Bryce Smith was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. That's the fewest earned runs he has allowed over his last four contests. He was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base.

In other batting news, Tristin Fisher was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Noah Clevenger also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Shepherd has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 26-10 record this season. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only 1.33 runs. As for Gladwin, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 9-11 record this season.

As of now, neither Shepherd nor Gladwin have any future games scheduled.
